Before the shortlist

Write a one-page buying brief

A buying brief keeps your priorities in view when product pages get persuasive. It can be a few lines in a notebook, with room for unanswered questions.

State the purpose in one sentence

Describe what you are looking to understand or change. Keep the sentence about your needs rather than a product category's popularity. 'I want an item with straightforward controls and clear care instructions' is easier to compare against a listing than 'I want the best beginner product.'

Separate essentials from preferences

List the details you need to verify before considering a purchase. Then add preferences you could compromise on, such as colour or packaging style. Do not turn a missing essential into a preference just because a product looks appealing. An unknown stays unknown until you have an answer.

Give each option the same headings

Use material, intended use, dimensions, care, and retailer policies as a starting point. Add a field for your particular requirement. Leave room to record the source of each detail. Compare the exact model rather than carrying a claim from one version of a product to another.

Write down the decision, including a pause

Your conclusion might be 'ask the maker,' 'remove this option,' or 'not buying now.' Record the reason in a sentence. This makes it easier to return later without reconstructing the whole search. A buying brief supports a choice; it does not assess individual medical suitability.

Compare exact models against a short personal brief

Write down the intended use, budget, controls, dimensions, care routine and any privacy requirements. Record the source for each fact and leave undisclosed details marked unknown. More settings or a premium label cannot decide which option fits your requirements.

Read the seller, delivery, warranty and opened-item returns terms before paying. If an unanswered question would change your decision, ask it first. You can postpone or choose nothing; this guide does not claim hands-on testing or a universal winner.
